Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope your weekends were fun-filled and warm. This recap is coming a day later than anticipated, but…life! My weekend didn’t go quite as planned, but it was still a good one. I was supposed to go into the city to go to the Union Square shops and see the Rockefeller Christmas tree, but Pat got really sick, so it didn’t happen.
On Thursday, we went to see Star Wars at 11pm. Yes, you read that correctly. I didn’t get home until 2:30am, but it was well worth it because the movie was awesome! I won’t spoil anything, but if you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely go. This picture of me isn’t the most flattering (thank you bad lighting and also Pat taking a photo pointing the camera upwards), but please note my Princess Leia shirt and my Storm Trooper pop corn holder.
What was not awesome was waking up Friday morning at 6:30. Needless to say, I was exhausted all day. To top off the exhaustion, we had some snowfall. It was sort of unexpected, so the roads were a total mess. I usually love just sitting inside and looking at the snow, but I don’t like driving around when the roads haven’t been salted or cleared. I don’t know what possessed me to still go, but I ended up at the gym that night. We did snatches (5×3 @ 75 lbs) and then a workout consisting of handstand push-ups (on a box for me), burpees, and lunges with a 25 lb plate overhead. I was happy I went and even happier that I was able to get my car out of the parking lot and make it home safely. Dinner was Chimichurri rice and chicken sausage from Trader Joe’s. I called it an early night.
Saturday morning started with a deep apartment cleaning. I’m still not fully unpacked and decorated (partially because I’ve been busy and partially because I am a procrastinator when it comes to certain tasks), so I also did a little bit of unpacking. After that, I took a nice 2 mile walk with Brooks. It was pretty cold outside, but he hadn’t been out for very long the day before, so the walk was much needed.
After our walk, I watched an episode of Once Upon a Time. I started this show back when it first came on TV, but gave up on it 2 seasons in. Let’s see if it keeps my interest this time around! I have to have something to watch while all the shows I’m currently loving are on hiatus! (Read a book, Rachel….read a book)
At around 5:00, I went over to my brother’s house. I accompanied my brother, sister-in-law, and my niece and nephew to see some pretty awesome Christmas lights. We stopped by Wawa for some hot chocolate (I got a small salted caramel), and then headed over to the house. The display was made up of over 200,000 lights and there’s an actual show that happens every 28 minutes that’s synched to music. It was very elaborate. The kids really enjoyed it, and my niece especially enjoyed the Let It Go montage. The show was free, but we made a donation, which went to a non-profit that helps disabled veterans afford homes.
After our Christmas light excursion, I stopped at Whole Foods to get some juice for my patient. Since he’s sick, I got him a juice with a bunch of greens (think spinach, kale, parsley, cucumber) for nutrients, an apple (for tastiness), and I added ginger and turmeric for their anti-inflammatory properties. When I got to his house, we chatted with his sister for a bit, watched some football, and then I left for the night.
Sunday morning started with the gym. I haven’t been to Crossfit on a Sunday in forever, so I was really happy I actually got up for it. Sundays are strength workouts at my gym. The workout this week was a 5×10 bench press, and I did it at 80 lbs. It was tough, but 80 lbs felt pretty good. For accessory work, we did 4×10 Bulgarian split squats. I hadn’t done these in a while, so I did the sets with ascending weights. 1 at 10 lbs, 2 at 20 lbs, and, at the urging of my coach, 1 at 25 lbs.
After the gym, I went home, took a quick shower, and then took Brooks out for a walk and a quick trip to PetSmart. At PetSmart, I got him a cute Christmas sweater (because I can’t resist), and then we got a picture with Santa. Brooks is a pretty nervous pup by nature, so he was a little bit scared of the whole process, and the look on his face in the picture makes that very clear. But I still think it’s an adorable picture! (Don’t worry, he got lots of treats for putting up with my desperate need for a photo with him and Santa)
When we got home, Pat came over with Panera. We ate, watched some football, and then I headed out to go grocery shopping. He offered to come with me, but I told him to sit home because he’s sick. A kind of hilarious thing happened when I went shopping. I picked up some “Elmo juice” for Pat (it’s just 100% juice that he says always makes him feel better and it happens to have Elmo on it–adorable). I also needed tissues and stumbled upon some with Star Wars on the box, so I got those. When I was checking out, a woman behind me, eyeing my cart, said something along the lines of “It’s so hard having a sick child at home, isn’t it?” I didn’t want to correct her, so I just nodded and smiled and tried not to giggle. Sick child, sick boyfriend, same thing 🙂
When I got home, Pat helped me unpack groceries. While he was unpacking, I started on some slow cooker chicken taco chili for our lunches this week. Then I got started on our Blue Apron dinner, which was chili butter steaks with roasted potatoes and broccoli. Pat offered to help, but again I told him to sit his butt down on the couch because I didn’t want him breathing on my food or exerting himself.
After dinner, we drank some tea (super ginger for him, genmaicha for me) and watched a few episodes of Friends (for some reason, we’ve been watching Friends before bed for a few weeks now). Between Pat’s illness and my having to get up at 4:30 for Crossfit the next morning, an early night was called for, so we fell asleep around 10:00pm.
So, that was my weekend. It didn’t quite go as planned, but it was a nice weekend anyway. I’m kind of bummed I probably won’t see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree before Christmas, but I think it’s up until New Year’s Day, so maybe I’ll meet Pat in the city next week so we can go see it then!
Question: What always makes you feel better when you’re sick?
